James Gorst Architects
Ropers Farm, Writtle, Essex
2002
A large contemporary house set in 100 acres of landscaped parkland on the fringe of Chelmsford. Each aspect of the house opens itself to a different approach and at frequent points the volume dissolves into voids, external spaces, cross axes, reflections and planting.
The project was exhibited in the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition in 2005 and was also displayed in an exhibition on New Country Houses at the Royal Institute of British Architects in September 2003.
"This is a well-considered and coherent building with a landscape design to match... This is the work of an Architect of skill and ability. The relationship between the internal space and landscape is drawing on the modern tradition, showing how modern thinking can add to the tradition of the country house."
